Prepare to be AMAZED: The Total Solar Eclipse is here!

Get ready to witness a celestial spectacle as the total solar eclipse graces the skies above much of the United States. As the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow that sweeps across the continent, millions will have the chance to witness this awe-inspiring event firsthand. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this extraordinary celestial phenomenon.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, obscuring the Sun’s disk and plunging the surrounding area into darkness. This rare event creates an unforgettable visual experience as the sky transforms into a twilight-like state.

How to Safely Watch the Eclipse

While witnessing the eclipse is a thrilling experience, it’s crucial to protect your eyes from the Sun’s intense rays. Viewing the eclipse directly without proper eye protection can cause serious eye damage. Be sure to use solar viewing glasses, also known as eclipse glasses, to safely observe the event. Alternatively, you can create a pinhole projector using simple materials to indirectly view the eclipse. Even if you don’t live in the area where the solar eclipse is possible; you can watch it through NASA’s Live on Youtube.

Where and When to Watch

The path of totality, where the eclipse will be visible in its entirety, will sweep across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Those lucky enough to be within this path will witness the full spectacle of the eclipse, while others outside the path will still experience a partial eclipse.

The eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean before making its way across Mexico and into the United States. It will then move through various states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Finally, the eclipse will traverse through Canada, passing through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton.

Timing is Key

The timing of the eclipse varies depending on your location. In the Central Daylight Time zone, totality will begin around 1:40pm CDT in Texas and progress through several states before exiting the US. In the Eastern Daylight Time zone, totality will commence around 3:13pm EDT in Ohio and continue through various northeastern states before entering Canada.
